| Short additional information to my last post Migrate SharePoint 2007 to 2013 – Windows Server 2012 doesn't support SharePoint 2010! Did you know this? I must admit -> I don't…
To make a long story short – it is really not supported as long as SP2 is not released à
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2724471/en-us ... ß but for my bad luck I didn't know this before – so here is the long story:
I thought, I can save some time and use an existing Windows 2012 Hyper-V Image, install there SharePoint 2010 and everything is running in minutes. As I started the prerequisite installer and got this error message:
I should have become suspicious but hey I'm a SharePoint Pro I can handle this ;-). So let's go on and install all required prerequisites manually and also configure the server roles by my own… Also a very good article explain the whole manual steps which are needed - http://mohamedradwan.wordpress.com/2012/06/21/install-sharepoint-2010-with-ms-sql-server-2012-on-windows-server-2012/ … This explains exactly the steps for Windows Server 2012 so I thought I'm in secureness that it will work… But for me not… I checked 3 times the server roles and features and every time got this error:
My problem was that I read over this part in the article "Return specific Environment.Exit code"… and additional my French is not perfect… But after a while digging I found this: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/7899.install-sharepoint-2010-on-windows-server-8-beta.aspx#Create_Emulated_ServerManagerCMD and now everything was clear… WTF? Create an Emulated ServerManagerCMD.exe??? Ok there must be something wrong… I searched in the microsoft KB and found the article that it is official not supported.. and here my story ends… I didn't try this out with the "emulator" because I lose so much time at this point and as we all know the REAL problems with such workarounds will hit you in the near future… So back to the start – install Windows Server 2008 R2 and SharePoint2010… ;-) |
| Yes it's cruel reality – customers still working on 2007 (don't want to think about the poor one's with 2003 ;-)). So if you don't want to use some commercial products which migrates content from 2007 to 2013, you must do it the hard way and migrate first to 2010 and then to 2013.
After I have not written any blog entry for the migration from 2007 to 2010, I can't reference it - So let's start in this first blog entry with a few things you have to consider when you migrate 2007 to 2010:
SharePoint 2007 must be at least at SP2 patch level Otherwise you would get the error "cannot upgrade an object … whose build version [12.0.0.6219] is too old." Ok, but what will you do when you have a new customer and he swear that SP2 is already installed and you look in the installed products and see that the SP2 is really there? Remember to verify the build-version in Central Administration under "Manage servers in farm". If there is not standing 12.0.0.6421 (or higher) it indicates that SP2 is installed but the SharePoint Product Configuration Wizard was never executed successful afterwards (like it was the case @ our new customer ;-))
SharePoint 2007 pre-upgrade checker reports corrupted databases This is a nice one :). Sounds very fatal and your palms get sweaty when you read the description of this error, but relax: If you did not make any manual schema changes to the database, you can ignore this error and continue with the upgrade. This is a residual error from the upgrade process from SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to Office SharePoint Server 2007. For more information, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 954772. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262967(v=office.14).aspx#SPS2003db (cool - when you come to a new customer and you get this error when you haven't maintained the system and also the customer can't say if there have been changes in the schema made… If you want to be 100% sure that there are no manual schema changes you can follow the description in this blog http://sharepointnomad.wordpress.com/2010/12/12/fix-content-database-with-modified-database-schemas-issue-when-upgrading-to-sharepoint-server-2010/)
SharePoint 2010 and SQL Server 2012 When you want to migrate 2007 to 2013 like me, you may also set up directly SQL Server 2012. Please be aware that you have to install SP1 before you execute the Configuration Wizard!!! Only SP1 will support SQL Server 2012 and otherwise you will get an error "Could not find stored procedure 'sp_dboption'."!
Missing links in SharePoint2010 Central Administration Seems that I have not started the central administration directly on the SharePoint Server for a long time – so I also stumpled upon this "error" that I didn't see all configuration menu's. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jorman/archive/2010/07/10/missing-links-or-access-denied-in-central-admin-sharepoint-2010.aspx -> so don't forget to start your central administration over windows menu and not directly in IE ;-)
Next time we will continue with the update to 2013… |
| To be honest I really don't care a lot about mobile phones. My 3 year old HTC 7 Trophy with Windows 7.5 installed was totally enough for me during the last years – I could make some calls and check my mails and that's it… BUT for my running project Vienna2Copenhagen I got two Nokia Lumia 920 with Windows Phone 8 installed for evaluation and I hate my old HTC now! Why? Because I grew fond of them and I have to return them today. And my current mobile phone provider doesn't have the Nokia Lumia 920 in stock… Ahhhhhh…
But how could this happen? Why I don't want to use my old HTC anymore? Here are the reasons:
- The Nokia Lumia 920 with Windows Phone 8 never crashed even in the worst conditions (-20 degrees and snow storm) and it never let me down!
- How often I heard from my counterpart in the past "I don't understand you", "Speak louder"… I never heard this when I talked with the Nokia – even when running with hard wind and snowy weather… but maybe also the good connection was thanks to A1, who gave me two SIM cards for my running project (maybe I should also think about switching mobile phone provider as well…)
- I love the brilliant clear display which you can use with gloves as well

- Worth mentioning is definitely also the integrated camera which shoots crystal clear pictures in high resolution. Carrying an additional SLR camera would definitely not have been an option for me ;-)

- And last but not least I don't know if I would really have made it all the way up to Copenhagen without the steady availability of Nokia Maps!!! As far as I know Nokia is the only cellphone where you can download your maps and even can use it offline
So what I'm supposed to do now? Forget about the good time we had and switch back to my old HTC? Tell Nokia that I lost it in Copenhagen? Hmm… I currently don't know… |
| On my way I got a mail 2 flo@runningsharepoint.com where I was asked a few questions about my whole project. Also at the ESPC I was very often faced with the same questions so let's try to answer them also here:
Why?
Of course this question I had to answer very often (even to myself ;-)). And the answer is quite easy to be told: as a child I always dreamed to travel the world. In my job career so far I had the chance to see lots of countries already. BUT how much you really see from a country in between one meeting and another or when you make the classic sightseeing stuff? I started to make long jogging runs on my visits and you won't imagine what stuff you will discover on your way. So for me a logic consequence was that I wanted to discover countries by foot. The idea to run to Copenhagen to the European SharePoint Conference was a lucky fortune and the first (maybe not the last, who knows?) kind of projects like this. Of course it was also very important to me to get an answer to the question – how far can you really push your body and mind…
Honestly does this mobile working stuff really work?
Yes and I have proof, because my company is still up and running :). Of course you must take your time and forget about pace, speed and the other stuff you may have focus at, at your normal training runs. So this means when you for example get a call for a video conference you can't run on with a 6:00min/km pace - you have to stop or walk for a while. So phone calls, video conferencing, answering short mails and of course THINKING is not the big deal on the way. For bigger tasks of course you have to stop, take a rest and grab your Surface… Of course without the whole cloud stuff this would not have been possible. With Office365 and SharePoint 2013 you have all your latest information synched every time on all devices and on your fingertips.
How did you plan your route? That's a really funny question. In detail I planned it with Bing Maps and Garmin, thought about how much can I run a day, looked at bicycle maps and was confident that my plan will work. But to be honest it didn't believe it myself from the first day onwards. As we experience so often equally in daily business, the reality is quite different to the plan. So the only way is to be flexible :). I started on the second day to plan day by day and adjust my route to the daily circumstances (weather, road conditions, meetings, health, …). Of course deep in mind you have the big picture but you must divide it into small working packages and this was in my case 10-15km. And worth to mention without the two Nokia Lumia 920 I got for this project (one for me for running and one for my dad to drive) it would be a complete chaos – Nokia Maps rulez!!!
For god's sake – why in winter?
To be honest I like the cold. I remember back when I was a child when I sit in the evening in the kitchen and watched the snowflakes falling and could not wait for the next day to get out and play. So this is my time of year and of course there are also a few positive side effects – e.g. you don't sweat too much -> so you also don't have to drink so much -> so you don't have to carry that much water with you… And of course – there is no bad weather, only bad clothes ;-)
How did your running / working day look like?
Get up at 07:00 / 07:30, plan the current day with running route and working time – communicate this over the MySite to my colleagues (also my customers have access to). Get out and run the first 10-15km. Make a morning break (eat and work). Next 10-15km. Eat, work and maybe sleep…. Next 10-15km and so on…
Where did you sleep? What did you eat? Washing clothes? That's quite "easy". I had my dad with a RV with me. So we planned meeting points on every 5 to 10km and of course I was very flexible with having a break, eat, work and everything. Because of this also the charging of the electronic devices was not a big deal.
Of course otherwise it wouldn't have worked!

| I made it on time and I'm very happy and proud so many people followed me on my way here. Especially the European SharePoint Conference team was honoring my journey with a small introduction and interview at the KeyNote :). Many people yesterday stopped me and complimented me on my journey and also a few said that it was a pitty that they could not really follow me because my blog is written in German – so I give it a try today and switch to English (no guarantee for misspelling ;-)).
You can also meet me today between 16:10 – 16:30 at the community area and have a chat with me about my journey
Also my colleagues in my company are right on time and as we planned it – we have finished the Beta-Version of our new Office 2 SharePoint product. This is a complete new version of our formerly known SharxX O2S. The main idea was to:
- Integrate the new design concepts from Microsoft
- Include the feedback of our customers in the product and make it simpler and smarter
- of course integrate SharePoint2013, Office2013 and Office 365
And I think we definitely achieved this. Here are a few screenshots and explanations – when you want to try it out on your own give me a shout at flo@runningsharepoint.com
The main concept of Office to SharePoint is to integrate your Office more smoothly with SharePoint. So you have your SharePoint environment always on your fingertips in your office products (like in Outlook, Word, Excel, …). Therefore there is a taskpane with your SharePoint sites and their whole structure:
Connecting is very easy and you can link whatever SharePoint Site you want (SharePoint 2007 – 2013, Server or not, Office 365, no matter what authentication you have, …) by easily dragging a link:
Upon clicking on a library an overlay is extended over your office product and you can smoothly work directly with your SharePoint
All the functionalities like filtering / sorting / grouping is supported and additional a direct search in the actual list:
One cool thing is that you can also undock the overlay and so you can open your mostly used lists in a new window and work with them.
Via drag&drop you can upload all stuff you want – no matter if it is a file, folder, mail or attachment… simple drag&drop something and the quick-upload will do the work for you in the background:
Another cool thing is that you can integrate your own apps very easily in Office to SharePoint because we provide the whole framework for free. E.g. we developed an app for room reservation for a big customer in Austria. The concept is very easy – data storage and business processes are done as always over SharePoint in the background and the interface for the user is very easily integrated into his Office client:
This is currently only the beta and many more functionalities yet still to come in a few weeks (e.g. multi-upload with attributing). So now I have to make a short morning run to the conference center – greetings from the wonderful Copenhagen :) |

In Kurzform was ist passiert:
